We were teased with the trailer and watched in anticipation as Tom Hardy's character Eddie Brock became the main character Venom. It was exciting, considering it's the first time Marvel Cinematic Universe have released a Spider-Man spin off - without the main man himself.

Now Hardy has let us into some inside info as he spoke during San Diego Comic-Con 2018 about the reasons behind him snapping up the role.

And it's not because the film will apparently feature a 'much grittier, grounded, complicated character', according to director Ruben Fleischer.

Nor is it because Venom will be 'more violent' than other Marvel movies, with 'no heroes'.

It's actually because Hardy's son is a huge fan of the comic-book character.

In an interview with Variety at the Comic-Con, Hardy said: "First and foremost I'm a dad and so one of the things you come across as a father often is a massive influx of stories often brought to you after Fireman Sam."

He continued: "My son came to me with a specific character that he absolutely fell in love with and then I started to take a look at it myself and then, as if by magic, a script appeared on the horizon which was awesome.

"Having had done Dark Knight [Rises] with Chris [Christopher Nolan] I'd kind of done my superhero bit it felt in some aspects.

"But when I was presented with the opportunity to play Venom, and that correlated with my son's love for Venom and how cool he was, I got really really excited and decided that I really wanted to do it."

According to Variety, Sony has high hopes for Venom and Fleischer said: "We're planning a huge world with this Venom story," which is hoped to be similar to what Marvel accomplished with the Avengers franchise.

So, does that mean there could be potential for Venom to some day bump in to Spider-Man? It seems Hardy is a fan of the idea, telling the crown he's ready to go.

Hardy plays a journalist called Eddie Brock who is investigating the Life Foudation, a sophisticated corporate survivalist group. When Eddie comes into contact with a goopy alien parasite he is infected and together they become the anti-hero known as Venom.

He suddenly starts experiencing unusual symptoms and realises he's been infected and has to learn how to live with the parasite occupying his body.

Venom will hit be released on 5 October, 2018.
