The new Madeleine McCann documentary was never going to be a comfortable watch. But viewers have taken to social media with one particular scene in the The Disappearance Of Madeleine McCann, which some say has left them 'terrified' and has left some in tears.

Although the film doesn't really offer up any new information than what we already know about her disappearance, it does explore a load of new theories from local and British police, journalists and psychologists - one of which suggests the little girl was the victim of an international paedophile ring.

The scene in question sees a re-enactment of a man entering the toddler's room wearing a surgical mask - suggesting she was drugged and then taken from her bed.

It was that disturbing that viewers took to Twitter to voice their disgust.

"On the topic of the Madeleine McCann documentary. Is it just me who was actually terrified of the actor in the mask reenacting getting into a kids bed. I was nearly crying. Couldn't look at the screen," one person wrote on Twitter.

Another said: "Actually beyond creeped out watching the episode of the Madeline McCann doc about the guy with the surgical mask, felt like I was watching a horror at the reenactment scene."

Someone else added: "The bit on the Madeleine McCann doc where that scary man wearing the doctors mask gets in bed with that little girl, I'm terrified I don't think I'll ever sleep again."

The Disappearance Of Madeleine McCann has been surrounded by controversy since it came out, with. The girl's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, refused to appear in the eight-part documentary saying they feared it would further fuel conspiracy theories surrounding the case and would hinder the search for Maddie - which is still ongoing.

Madeleine went missing while on holiday in 2007 at a popular family resort in the Algarve in Portugal. She went missing one night while her parents were eating at a tapas restaurant with their friends. Although both the parents reportedly went back to check on the children regularly, at around 10pm on the night in question, Kate discovered that Madeleine was not in her bed.

What happened to Madeleine after that has never been confirmed, with over £11.75 million spent by UK authorities on the investigation, but very few leads actually recovering any information.
