No one likes going on a diet. They're fairly awful prospects; you can't eat any of your favourite foods and you have to exercise. Neither of these options sound good.

But what if there was another way? What if you could still eat sausage rolls and yet lose weight? Well, the Greggs diet is here.

Incredibly, one man has managed to lose two stone in just six weeks, while eating nothing but meals from the country's favourite high street bakery.

David Hulston, 46, took part in the 'Minimise Me' challenge to see if he could slim down in time for his friend's wedding, and slim down he did.

Along with five other contestants, David's progress was tracked during a new Channel 4 documentary, presented by Dr Xand van Tulleken and GP Dr Helen Lawal.

Each had to stick to different diets to see who cpuld lose the most weight.

This wasn't a free for all though. David had to follow a couple of rules; he couldn't eat more than 1,800 calories per day and could only order from the chain's Minimise Me menu.

So no, he wasn't stuffing his face with iced fingers and festive bakes, instead his new regimen generally consisted of an egg roll for brekkie, a sausage roll for lunch, and a coconut, lime and chili chicken salad for dinner.

The choreographer's snacks were also limited to healthy options, like a banana or a fruit medley pot - he was also allowed red berry porridge for breakfast and even one slice of margherita pizza for lunch.

Probably the most difficult thing to cut out was alcohol, but he didn't touch a drop.

David wasn't allowed everything on the Greggs menu.

And all that hard work really paid off for Dave as he managed to drop from 17st to 15st, seeing his waistline shrink along with his weight.

David said: "I'm over the moon. I did feel hungry but I'm glad I stuck to it. I'm fast approaching 50 and want to feel fit by the time I do.

"But when I started I was the heaviest I've ever been - and I love Greggs' pasties. If you think you have the willpower, then go for it."

Dr van Tulleken added: "There's always something we want to slim down for - whether it's a wedding or a holiday. But how do we know which diet will work for us? In this series, we test the latest diets."

Speaking to the Mail, however, dietician Marcela Fiuza said that it is unwise to follow the Greggs diet.

She said: "Eating just 1,800 calories daily, no matter where from, will result in weight loss.

"But a Greggs-only diet lacks fresh produce and vital vitamins and minerals and is high in sugar and fat."

How To Lose Weight Well is on Channel 4 on Monday 7 January at 8pm.
