The King of Pop died nearly eight years ago after being given a cocktail of medications from his doctor Conrad Murray.

A toxicology report stated Michael Jackson died from an overdose of the sedative propofol, but he also had lorazepam and midazolam in his system.

Murray was charged with involuntary manslaughter in 2010 and served just two years of his four-year sentence.

MJ's memorial saw an outpouring of grief not seen since the funeral of Princess Diana or former US President Ronald Regan.

More than 31 million Americans streamed the memorial online and watched as Jackson's daughter Paris told the crowd: "Ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine ... I just wanted to say I love him ... so much."

Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, John Mayer, Jennifer Hudson, Usher, Jermaine Jackson, and Shaheen Jafargholi all performed at the event.

While his death came as a shock for many, it might not have been for Jackson himself. Newly revealed letters show the 'Thriller' singer believed people were actively trying to kill him.

Jackson's long-time friend, German businessman Michael Jacobshagen, has told Australian broadcaster Sunday Night that he was given 13 letters from Jackson in the lead up to his death.

In these documents, Jackson said things like 'They are trying to murder me' and 'I am scared about my life'.

Unfortunately, the letters never expose who 'they' are, but some of the notes refer to the stress he endured under concert promoters AEG.

Jacobshagen says Jackson called him in a panic just days before he was due to perform in London at the O2 arena. The 34-year-old flew to the US to be with his friend and it was there that he was handed the letters.

He has gone public with the notes for the first time to support Paris's claims that her father was murdered.

She told Rolling Stone magazine this year: "All arrows point to that. It sounds like a total conspiracy theory and it sounds like bullshit, but all real fans and everybody in the family knows it. It was a setup. It was bullshit."

In the wake of his death, Jackson's mum and three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, filed separate wrongful death suits against AEG, claiming the company was negligent in hiring Conrad Murray.

But in 2013, the jury ruled in favour of the concert promoting company.
