Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds will return with a new album this year, with the band also announcing plans to tour the UK and Ireland.

Who Built The Moon? is the third full-length solo release from the former Oasis guitarist, following 2015's Chasing Yesterday and 2011's self-titled debut.

The album's producer, DJ and composer David Holmes, has described Who Built The Moon? as a collection of "placid instrumentals, hypnotic, eastern-influenced grooves, gutsy balcony-shakers and widescreen, cinematic walls of sound."

The news has clearly delighted some fans on social media.

Noel teased the recording of Who Built The Moon? last year in an Instagram post, where he captioned a photo with: "New shoes. New amp. New album. There is no rest for the wicked ones."

The new album is expected to be released on 24 November 2017.

The new album will have a lot to live up to after a strong reception for the band's previous two records. Their debut scored 5/5 in the Daily Telegraph, with critic Neil McCormick describing the album as "the best collection of [Noel] Gallagher tunes since his Morning Glory days".

The next album was similarly praised, with Rolling Stone saying: "The greater appeal of Chasing Yesterday is in the way Gallagher, 47, now does reflection, loss and persistent optimism, leavening his usual power chords and pub-choir-ready choruses with a dusky, psychedelic churn that exposes the long, hidden thread running from early-70s Traffic to The Stone Roses."

It also won the Best Album category at the 2015 Q Awards.

Noel says he was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane track 'High Flying Bird' for the band's name. He also took the idea to have his name at the front from Fleetwood Mac's debut album, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac.
