The Beatles may be known for spawning countless hits over the years, but there's apparently one album that's been particularly resonant with the people of Britain - who have voted Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band their favourite ever studio album.

Some 40 years after its release, the Beatles' eighth studio album has been honoured in a special countdown compiled by the Official Charts Company to mark this weekend's National Album Day, which took place on Sat 13 October.

Albums had been ranked considering a combination of physical sales, downloads and streams in order to eventually determine the nation's definitive fave.

The only record from the 1960s to make it into the list, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band just pipped Adele's 21 to the top spot, with 5.34 million combined sales to her 5.11 million.

Oasis' (What's The Story) Morning Glory came third with 4.94 million, with others in the top 10 including Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Amy Winehouse's Back To Black.

Adele's follow up to 21, 2015's 25, also featured in the top 10, while Michael Jackson was another to have two albums in there, with Thriller and Bad in fifth and seventh place, respectively.

The act with the most albums in the top 40 list is Coldplay, who had A Rush Of Blood To The Head at 27, X&Y at 32 and Parachutes at 40.

Of course, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band isn't the band's only famous record - some of you might have been a little surprised to learn that their equally cherished White Album didn't make the list.

Fear not, though, because soon you can get your mitts on a special 50th anniversary edition of the acclaimed album, with two releases dropping this November to mark five decades since it first hit shelves in 1968.

Remixed by Giles Martin, son of original album producer George Martin, and mix engineer Sam Okell, the original 30 tracks have been re-worked to create a six-CD and blu ray set, four-LP vinyl set, three-CD deluxe set and two-LP vinyl set, all of which will go on sale on 9 November.

Apart from the two-LP set, all formats will also include 27 demo recordings created at George Harrison's house during May 1968, known as the 'Esher Demos'.
