Oasis classic 'Live Forever' has been voted the best British song ever in a new Radio X poll.

The third single from Oasis' 1994 debut Definitley Maybe topped the poll, beating 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to the coveted top spot - despite the fact that the Queen hit had previously come in at number one last year.

NME reports that Noel said of the news: "I have always tried to aim higher than I think is possible. Some people try to be bigger or better than their contemporaries or their predecessors... Me? I'm just trying to be better than myself, which as we now know is virtually impossible."

The top 10 also featured several other Oasis hits, including 'Don't Look Back in Anger' in third place, 'Wonderwall' in sixth, 'Slide Away' in seventh and 'Champagne Supernova' in ninth.

Matt Deverson, managing editor of Radio X, added: "This year, we see Oasis take the number one spot in a Top 100 that features truly great British tunes from across the decades.

"The release of 'Live Forever' in 1994 heralded the arrival of an era-defining debut album from one of the country's greatest bands - it was a hugely exciting moment for British music.

"It's a very special song and within the past year we have seen it resonate with even more poignancy as a much-loved Manchester anthem."

The response on Twitter seemed fairly mixed, with some writing that the Oasis win was 'deserved', while others were left a little unconvinced.

"How on Earth did Oasis get no 1 and the Beatles weren't top 10?" wrote one person.

"Not even the best Oasis song never mind best British one ffs," another said.

The rest of the top 10 also featured The Stone Roses' 'I Am the Resurrection' in fourth place, 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' by The Verve in fifth and 'There is a Light That Never Goes Out' by The Smiths in eighth, rounded off in tenth place with Arctic Monkeys' 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor'.

Elsewhere in the top 20 were, in order:The Stone Roses' 'I Wanna Be Adored', David Bowie's 'Heroes', Arctic Monkeys' 'A Certain Romance', David Bowie's 'Life On Mars?', Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway To Heaven', Pulp's 'Common People', Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here', The Rolling Stones' 'Gimme Shelter', The Stone Roses' 'She Bangs The Drums' and The Courteeners' 'Not Nineteen Forever'.
