The Killers' Mr Brightside breaks unique record 20 years after its release

The Killers' Mr Brightside breaks unique record 20 years after its release

'Mr Brightside' overtook Oasis' 'Wonderwall' to bag the record

"Comin' out of my cage and I've been doin' just fine. Gotta, gotta be down because I want it all."

Just a couple of lines can get Brits rushing onto the dancefloor and singing along, and that's all because 'Mr Brightside' from The Killers is just one of those songs which has stuck around.

Even before those first lyrics hit your ears, the opening notes of the song are unmistakable, and it's been a staple of many a playlist since it first released all the way back in 2003.

Billie Eilish apparently used to sit in the car and cry listening to it. The rest of us will probably stick to screaming along to it in sweaty nightclubs.

Now the song has broken a record which had previously been held by that track basically everyone with a guitar knows how to play, Oasis' 'Wonderwall'.

That's because 'Mr Brightside' has just overtaken it to become the UK's biggest selling single never to reach number one in the charts.

According to Official Charts, 'Mr Brightside' is not only the best selling song in the UK never to reach the top of the charts, but also the third biggest song in the UK overall.

Brandon Flowers came up with the lyrics to the song after discovering that his girlfriend had been cheating on him, while Dave Keuning had already composed the music for the song before the two even met.

The song is streamed about 1.8 million times by Brits each and every week, and it also holds to accolade of having spent the most weeks on the top 100 chart in UK history.

That's because at the moment it has racked up a whopping 408 weeks, roughly eight years, in the UK top 100 singles chart.

'Mr Brightside' had its best moment in that time after the band performed at Glastonbury in 2019.

Despite the song's stupendous success it actually reached no higher than 10th place in the UK singles chart, climbing that high back in 2004, but now it's supplanted 'Wonderwall' for the auspicious but somewhat niche accolade of the most popular song in the UK never to reach number one.

The Killers told Official Charts: "Thank you so much to all our fans for making 'Mr. Brightside' the third biggest song of all time in the UK, and the biggest ever not to have reached Number 1; not yet at least!

"This Top 10 Award means a lot to us, Mr. Brightside has been completely embraced by the British public and we can’t wait to celebrate with you all on the road.

"Thank you for supporting us. See you soon!"

Obviously 'Mr Brightside' would lose this accolade quite quickly if everyone suddenly decided to go out and buy it or stream it, but it's likely that The Killers wouldn't be too fussed about having a song that breaks records doing even better.

No doubt you'll hear it again soon.
