Today marks five years since Robin Williams tragically passed away.

With a career that spanned more than 40 years, the 63-year-old starred in some of the best-known and best-loved films of all time. From Aladdin to Mrs Doubtfire, and from Good Will Hunting to Hook, he made adults and kids laugh and cry in equal measure.

But in 2014, the father-of- three was found dead at his home in California.

On the fifth anniversary of his death, fans around the world have taken to social media to praise the late comedian, with many calling him one of the greatest.

Writing on Twitter, one fan said: "Five years ago Robin Williams left our world. He was a gifted actor who loved to make everyone laugh. Aside from his incredible witty humor, he taught us another valuable lesson. Always check in on friends and family to see how they're doing. We miss you, Robin"

A second tribute read: "It's hard to believe it's been 5 years today since Robin Williams died. He was truly one of a kind, a uniquely gifted comic and actor."

"Five years ago, the world lost a truly gifted human being. A great humanitarian, a fantastic actor and an out-of-this-world stand-up comedian. We all still miss you - R.I.P. Robin Williams," wrote a third.

Some of his stand out roles include; Patch Adams, Jumanji, Dead Poets Society, and Jack, which many of us grew up watching and loving.

Praising the late actor, fans thanked him for being such a massive part of their childhood.

"Robin Williams is, and will continue to be , an inspiration. He was a large part of my childhood, making me laugh, cry, and feel. I miss him everyday. Thank you, Robin. For everything," said one.

While another person added: "When I think of childhood I think of Robin Williams. I can't believe it's been 5 years since this amazing soul left this earth. Remembering Robin Williams five years after his death."

Earlier this year, Williams's eldest son Zak paid tribute to his dad by naming his first son after the late stand-up.

The 36-year-old named his son McLaurin Clement Williams, giving his son his dad's middle name, according to People.

Since his father's death, Zak has been a mental health advocate and says he wish he'd spent more time with him.

In a biography about his dad, named Robin, he said: "I'm kicking myself for not visiting him during that time.

"Because I think that was a very lonely period for him. In retrospect, I feel like I should have been there, spending time with him. Because someone who needs support was not getting the support he needed."
