Bye Germany. Catch you in four years, yeah? The reigning champions of the World Cup have had a massive fall from the top spot, failing to make it through the first round in Russia.

Their performance was so shocking, they've felt the need to apologise to footie fans about it.

A couple of posts have appeared on the German team's Twitter account following their ridiculous 2-0 defeat against South Korea.

They said yesterday that they are 'speechless' to have been knocked out of the tournament so early, and congratulated their rivals.

Then, in a longer post this morning, they wrote: "Dear fans, we feel just as disappointed as you. The World Cup only comes around every four years and we expected so much more from us. We're sorry for not playing like world champions, and as painful as it is, we deserve to be out...

"Your support across the globe was incredible. We celebrated together in 2014, but sometimes in football you have to accept defeat and admit that your opponents were better."

The tweets have come as the squad have been pictured looking miserable at Moscow's Vnukovo airport. They're on their way to face the music back at home, where millions of disappointed fans are waiting.

Thankfully, they've received quite a lot of support on the social media platform so far.

One fan in America wrote: "Things happen, and matches are lost. But the most important thing is that you guys did your best and had fun.

"This is also a learning experience for the next World Cup, it may be bitter now but I promise there will be sweetness soon enough. Much love and support from America!"

Another said: "Am still loving you boys! No matter what happened you're still my fav team since I was 13. I do believe you'll be bounce back in the next Euro2020 & WC2022. Uber alles!"

The German team are one of the most successful in history, having won four World Cup tournaments, putting them on a level with Italy and behind only Brazil - a team who also aren't performing as well as everyone expected.

Earlier in the tournament, Germany failed to score against Brazil, despite having 26 shots at a goal. No one expected them to tank so badly - before the World Cup started, they were among the favourites to win.

Ah well, let's hope for a better surprise tonight when England play Belgium.
