End Of An Era As WWE's Shawn Michaels Finally Cuts His Flowing Locks

The WWE ambassador opted for a change of look ahead of his appearance at Wrestlemania 34 this weekend

There are certain people who are not remembered by posterity, yet play a key role in it. Charles I's hangman, Donald Trump's hairstylist, whoever commissioned Friends.

And now, to add to the pantheon of unheralded heroes/villains lost to the annals of history is Evan Dell. Why now? Because the Florida barber has cut off WWE star Shawn Michael's signature long hair.

Now, do bear in mind that Michael's had this done on purpose. He's a wrestler after all. If he hadn't wanted it, he would have simply wrestled the scissors out of Dell's hands - unless of course he was following Calvin's old adage that you should 'never criticise a guy with a razor'.

Popculture.com reports that a Facebook post from Dell - now seemingly deleted - said: "Today I had the honor of meeting a childhood hero of mine Shawn Michaels, and getting him ready for Wrestlemania this weekend.

"Shawn has had the ponytail for over 20 years, and today he had me cut it off and give him a new look. Such a genuine and down-to-earth guy - it was such a privilege being trusted with the famous locks."

The Heartbreak Kid was having his locks diminished before Wrestlemania 34, which is due to take place in New Orleans this weekend. Michaels isn't set to wrestle, having retired eight years ago, but he will be there - albeit with less hair than might previously have been expected.

Michaels is one of wrestling's elder statesmen and among the most decorated figures in the history of the sport, having wrestled consistently in WWE from 1988 to 1998.

After holding non-wrestling roles, he returned in 2002 and wrestled until 2010. Now a WWE ambassador, his decision to retire was based on wanting to spend more time with his son, Cameron, who was nine at the time.

As well as attaining a swathe of awards during his long career (including WWF World Heavyweight Championship three times and Royal Rumble in 1995 and 1996), Michaels has racked up a series of cool nicknames including (Just a) Sexy Boy, The Headliner and The Showstopper.

He now joins a long list of famous people who have cut their hair in dramatic style. In order of those to have done so successfully to unsuccessfully, they are:

  • Andre Agassi (looked far better bald than with long hair)
  • Michael Stipe (looked great with hair, but equally good without)
  • David Silva (his locks were glorious, and cutting them was a terrible decision)
  • Samson (It cost him his life)
