PlayStation 5 'Leak' Claims It Will Be Incredibly Powerful

Gamers around the world have been waiting an eternity for the new PlayStation to hit the shelves, and, I'm afraid, you still have a while yet to wait.

However, there is some good news - at least if the latest 'leak' is to be believed. Now, leaks, for good reason, are notoriously unreliable, but according to one well-known 'leaker' called Komachi, the PlayStation 5 is going to be one of the most powerful consoles to ever grace the Earth.

So, let's hope this one's true.

Taking to Twitter, the gaming expert posted what are purported to be the speeds for its graphics processor - which Komachi says will reach an incredible 2ghz.

The post read: "Oberon A0. Gen2 : GFXCLK = 2.000GHz Gen1 : GFXCLK = 0.911Ghz Gen0 : GFXCLK = 0.800Ghz."

If you're none the wiser as to what the hell that means, it was later shared and explained by another Twitter user, Is A Parrot, who said this equates to a speed of about 9.2 teraflops.

Parrot's tweet read: "BREAKING: THIS IS PS5. According to this leak - the GPU will be clocked at an insane 2ghz. This equates to 9.2 TF on the RDNA architecture. Or roughly 14 TF on the GCN Architecture aka over double the power of the X1X. Almost RTX2080 power."

But if, like me, this still means nothing to you, then fear not, Parrot has us covered.

Adding to his post, he wrote: "In English: it's very powerful."

According to reports, if this is right, it will make it faster than some of graphics cards users buy to power their PC consoles, such as AMD's Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT.

Now, as Sony is yet to publish the official details of the PlayStation 5's processor, these figures should be treated with a healthy pinch of salt. But if they're right, then gamers have got a lot to look forward to.

These sentiments were echoed earlier this year when the man behind it all, Mark Cerny, assured us all that the PlayStation 5 wouldn't merely be an upgrade to previous versions of the famed console.

While both Microsoft and Sony have milked the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles with the likes of the Xbox One S and PS4 Pro, Cerny said this time that's not the case.

He said: "The key question is whether the console adds another layer to the sorts of experiences you already have access to, or if it allows for fundamental changes in what a game can be."

According to Cerny, for the PlayStation 5, it's the latter.

The console will feature a new AMD CPU, which Cerny explained will allow for 3D audio with no extra hardware.

"As a gamer, it's been a little bit of a frustration that audio did not change too much between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4," he said.

"With the next console, the dream is to show how dramatically different the audio experience can be when we apply significant amounts of hardware horsepower to it."
