The first reviews for the Barbie movie have roller skated in and critics are singing its praise

Variety's Katcy Stephan called Barbie ‘perfection’ while noting its ‘nuanced commentary’.

Well, the first reviews are in for Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie movie.

While it’s difficult to live up to its hype - shoutout to Margot Robbie for absolutely slaying pink at every press junket - so far, critics are raving.

Variety's Katcy Stephan praised Barbie as ‘perfection’ while noting Gerwig’s ‘nuanced commentary’ to the iconic Mattel toy.

"'Barbie is perfection. Greta Gerwig delivers a nuanced commentary on what it means to be a woman in a whimsical, wonderful and laugh-out-loud funny romp. The entire cast shines, especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in roles they were clearly born to play,” she wrote.

Rotten Tomatoes-certified critic Eliana Dockterman also shared her thoughts in a Time Magazine cover story, dubbing it ‘a fun yet self-aware romp with shades of Clueless and Legally Blonde."

I mean, this pink kooky swirl sounds delightful.

“So, what exactly is this movie? Even with the onslaught of pink-tinged marketing, Warner Bros. has managed to keep the plot under wraps. I’m not here to spoil the film, which I watched in Gerwig’s temporary office, a gray space in Chelsea accessorized with a magenta Barbie doormat,” she said.

“But I can share that it’s a fun yet self-aware romp with shades of Clueless and Legally Blonde. It’s also stuffed full of ideas, and occasionally overwhelmed by them.”

However, movie reviewer Perri Nemiroff shared her mixed feelings about the flick.

While she praised the film’s aesthetic and craftsmanship, Nemiroff believed that certain character arcs needed to be fleshed out.

"As for the story, that's where I'm a bit more mixed. I think the film serves Margot Robbie's Barbie and her journey especially well, but there are other characters experiencing important arcs that needed more screen time to really dig into and explore to the fullest," Nemiroff wrote.

Recently, Robbie attended the film’s red carpet - or should we say pink carpet - in LA, where she was joined by Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Dua Lipa, Ariana Greenblatt, Nicki Minaj and Issa Rae.

The Australian actor paid homage to the 1960s Solo in the Spotlight Barbie, wearing a Schiaparelli Haute Couture strapless gown with Lorraine Schwartz jewellery and Manolo Blahnik heels.

Of course, the look had many drooling.

One marvelled: “I don’t think you guys understand how depressed I am gonna be once the barb promo ends… like this is so fun and Margot eats up every time.”

While another said: “Her shadow is literally the Barbie logo omfg.”

Barbie is set to roller skate into cinemas July 20.
