Disney+ launched in the US last week, boasting some of the biggest television shows and movies around.

But while fans were queuing up to subscribe to the new channel so they could watch modern classics like Iron Man, Avengers Assemble and Guardians of the Galaxy on demand, a newbie is taking the channel by storm, Star Wars: The Mandalorian.

The series is set in the Star Wars universe, five years after the events of Return of the Jedi (the 1983 movie that forms the final part of the series' original trilogy), and follows the adventures of Mandalorian bounty hunter Dyn Jarren.

And according to fans who've been lucky enough to see it, the sci-fi spin-off is a 'masterpiece'.

Taking to Twitter, one fan posted: "The Mandalorian is the best Show on Disney + no regrets."

A second added: "The Mandalorian is the best thing that has come out of Star Wars in a long time."

Meanwhile, another fan said it surpasses the original story, writing: "Cannot stress enough how amazing The Mandalorian is! Best take on the Star Wars universe I've seen, honestly preferring it to the main saga."

But it's not just fans who have been won over by the series - critics have been falling over themselves to heap praise on Disney's new offering.

Writing for Forbes, Dani Di Placido said: "Only two episodes in, and The Mandalorian already feels more authentic, more Star Wars, than any of Disney's film sequels.

"The Mandalorian is slightly darker than what we're used to, yet undeniably goofy, packed with peculiar creatures, gunfights that end in disintegrations, and environments that feel like Ralph McQuarrie concept art brought to life."

The new show has been praised for saving the Star Wars series.

The new series is directed by Bryce Dallas Howard, perhaps best known for playing Claire Dearing in Jurassic World.

Posting on Instagram, the 38-year-old said: "It's been a surreal and exhilarating experience getting to direct in the Star Wars universe!

"Thank you always and forever to George [Lucas] for starting it all, @dave.filoni for being our oracle, everyone at @lucasfilm, all the fans who came out last night to celebrate this next chapter, and a deep thank you to the entire Star Wars family for making this possible!

"Last, but very much so not least, thank you @jonfavreau for giving me a shot, for mentoring me, for inspiring and empowering every soul on set, and for dreaming big for all of us."
