WARNING: Spoilers ahead

Jennifer Carpenter has told critics that she's set to reprise her role as Debra in the upcoming Dexter: New Blood series. Watch the trailer here:

Carpenter confirmed the news during a Q&A at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, and even offered a glimpse into how her return will play out.

This time round, it seems Debra - who was killed off in the controversial 2013 series finale - is set to feature as a figment of Dexter's imagination.

"I don't think of her as a ghost, more of a link, or an echo, or an inconvenient truth for Dexter," Carpenter explained (via TVLine).

"[She] comes back to sort of haunt and punish and caretake and provoke and love [him]."

Michael C. Hall, who plays the show's title character, also spoke about his on-screen sister's return.

He said: "As much as [Deb] is an internalised character for Dexter, I think [she] represents how far he's fallen... without a compass.

"I was so excited about Jennifer doing this because I knew she would be able to shape shift and come at Dexter from so many different places. And, of course, she did.

"It was really fun to crack open our sense of internal landscape, because it's much more pyrotechnic and crazy than it used to be."

John Lithgow, who played the Trinity Killer in the show, has also been added to the cast for the reboot.

Hall has previously acknowledged the widespread disappointment with the way the original series ended, which bizarrely saw his character leaving everything behind to become a lumberjack.

Speaking to ET back in January, he said: "I certainly can appreciate why [the ending] left a majority of the viewers feeling left out in the cold or frustrated.

"He literally didn't say anything at the end. He had been talking to us the whole time and he just started at the camera and it was over. He put his sister in the ocean. What the hell was that?"

Dexter: New Blood is set to pick up nearly a decade after the events of that finale, with Hall's character now living in the small fictional town of Iron Lake, New York.

Working as a shopkeeper, Dexter has managed to control his urges, though a series of incidents threaten the return of his 'dark passenger'.

The miniseries is set to premiere later this year, on 9 November.
