Chatty Man, Spexy Beast, clean-shaven comedian. For years we've loved Alan Carr and his hilarious ways - there are few celebrities he's not interviewed, nor is there much he doesn't have an opinion on.

One thing that's remained constant throughout his career, however, is that we've always known him without facial hair. But on Tuesday, the 41-year-old comedian from Northampton, UK, posted a picture that took us all by surprise.

Yes, it's Alan Carr, but with a beard.

He captioned the image: "I think being a hipster suits me."

Many of his fans were quick to announce their shock at what they saw - someone even mentioned that they'd dropped their phone in shock.

One naysayer wrote: "Wtf is that Alan? Are you auditioning for the new Bear Grylls? Defo need the strimmer out for that."

While another fan seemed to prefer the hair growth, adding: "You're looking very well and healthy... loving the beard too."

However, looking at this in closer detail, maybe all is not as it seems.

Alan posted it from The London Studios, which is where they film shows such as Good Morning Britain, This Morning, The Graham Norton Show, Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and The Jonathan Ross Show - which could imply that he has just been messing about in the props cupboard.

With this eventuality in mind, some have suggested that Alan now resembles a character from Game of Thrones, drawing comparisons to the impressively-bearded Tormund - you know, the one who's head-over-heels in love with Brienne of Tarth. Or should that be lust? Oh well, I've typed it now.

Others believe there are links to Chewbacca, Tom Hanks in Castaway, Brian Blessed or even Santa (yeah, as if the others weren't a little farfetched).

Alan also appears to be wearing some sort of hairdresser's cape, which adds further to the theory that this is only make-up, and the two bottles of water in the background might suggest he's on set somewhere. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.

The comedian is set to present I Don't Like Mondays on Channel 4, where contestants can win a year's salary.
