Where's the sauce?!

School lunches were a form of art at one point. Turkey twizzlers, chips and beans. Burger, smiley faces, and cubed carrots. Fish fingers! Those were the days.

Well, they were days until Jamie Oliver came along. The chef literally ripped up the rule book and told the dinner ladies that they had to start going all healthy.

To be fair, you can't argue it's not in the best interests of the nation.

It doesn't, however, parents trying to give their kids some fatty foods in their lunch box. Recently, a headteacher had to write a letter to parents after he found last night's Happy Meals and crisp butties in some of the kids' lunchboxes.

It may be slightly different in America on the rules (the UK government insists that there's two be no more than two portions of deep-fried, battered, or breaded food per week on a school menu, nor any added sugar, crisps, chocolate or vending machines), but you imagine it's largely similar.

Having said that, one school in the states seems to have completely given up the ghost.

Hempfield Area High School in Pennsylvania served its children chicken nuggets in a hot dog bun.

Ok, now if Maccies started doing this we'd probably lap it up.

And although they score zero on originality, they didn't even make an effort with presentation as the pictures show.

I guess all creativity went into the name which was marketed as the 'Popcorn Chicken Po-Boy Sandwich'.

A po-boy, if you're wondering, is a traditional sandwich from Louisiana which almost always consists of meat and is served in a baguette (specifically with a crisp crust and a fluffy centre).

The sandwich, on this occasion, just looks so sad and dry. There's not even any ketchup on the limp-looking loaf.

And then we come to the price. If this was served to you, if you didn't get change from a quid you'd be questioning society.

This set the poor purchaser back $2.75 (£2.22).

Some people have already been responding on social media, although it does leave you to ponder on exactly what American's are taught about food in the school...

Ahhh yes, the infamous chicken nugget group.

If this was done correctly the chicken nugget sandwich could have become a thing, sadly, they've missed the boat on this one.

School lunches have never carried a great reputation for quality. The popcorn chicken po-boy proved this, but it could have been worst... a lot worse!

Have a look at this hamburger.

You're better off bringing in your own from home at times. One schoolkid really did appreciate his mum's own handiwork, so much so he wanted to share it. But, also, for the good of humanity.
