Brazilian Car Fan Builds His Own 'Ferrari' Out Of Scrap Metal

Brazilian Car Fan Builds His Own 'Ferrari' Out Of Scrap Metal

PROS: It's cheaper, it's one of a kind. CONS: Everything else.

A Brazilian car enthusiast has managed to side-step the fact that he can't afford to buy a Ferrari by making one of his own in his garage.

The car that Geovane Felix Ramos Santos has constructed is almost entirely made from scrap metal, as well as some parts that he was able to cobble together from a coach and a motorbike engine.

OK, it's not perfect, there are probably more differences than there are similarities to the real thing, but you can't fault the guy for trying. It takes a lot of skill to build your own car, even if it looks like it's already been in a crash.

The car that it is based on is the Ferrari LaFerrari, a £10m sports car built by the Italian motoring giants. Ramos Santos' car only cost around 6,000 Brazilian Real, about £1,500.

That represents a significant saving, at least.

It turns out that Geovane's - shall we say - enterprising spirit runs in his family. His dad once made an aeroplane out of an old VW Beetle, apparently.

He said: "I am the son of a blacksmith and my dad once made a plane out of a Beetle car back in the 80s."

Explaining his bold decision to take on the might and assembled car-building expertise of Ferrari, he said: "I am very passionate about Ferraris. I created this cute Ferrari for exhibiting. It's not for driving every day."

So, let's tally up that facts about the two cars. Before we begin, let's also bear in mind that we know nothing of the power of the Brazilian's Ferrari.

The Italian Ferrari has a top speed of nearly 220 miles per hour, it can go from 0 - 60 in around 2.4 seconds, and can reach 186 miles per hour in 15 seconds.

As far as we know, the Brazilian challenger can do none of that.

The genuine LaFerrari lapped the company's test circuit at Fiorano in 1:19:70, which is quicker than any road legal Ferrari has ever made it around.

The Brazilian Ferrari has yet to attempt a test lap around Fiorano.

OK, so the specifications of Geovane's car don't quite add up to those of the original, but still, his ingenuity and determination are to be admired.

It could also be argued that his car may one day be more valuable than the Ferrari given the intrigue that it is sure to generate, plus the fact that it is genuinely one of a kind.

Or, it could return to the scrapheap that it came from.

Good luck to him, anyway.
