British Classic, The Sausage Roll, Gets Name Change As American Supermarket Thinks It Has Invented It

British Classic, The Sausage Roll, Gets Name Change As American Supermarket Thinks It Has Invented It

Brits aren't having it.

Its roots can argue to have started in Britain from 1800 onwards. Yet one American firm thinks it's just invented it.

It's the humble sausage roll. Or, as American's are now calling it, the 'puff dog'.

Now, hold back the bitter taste of disgust, we'll explain what's going on here.

Let's first go back. The beginnings of sausage rolls can date back to Roman times when meat was wrapped in pastry, but as for pork, it only began to be popular in London during the Napoleonic Wars.

From that point, Britain took hold of the sausage roll and held it with greater pride than the Statue of Liberty holding her torch.

Grocery chain, Trader Joe's, has now set up what it is calling the 'snack of the summer' and it's got the US excited.

On the company's website, it says: "Hot dogs are, of course, typically served on bun. Trader Joe's Puff Dogs takes this classic dog-meets-dough pairing to the next level: each uncured, all-beef dog is instead swaddled in a perfectly flaky-when-cooked-pastry.

"We don't mean to hot dog here, but this marriage of beefy and buttery is pretty genius."

Quite frankly, if you're calling yourself 'genius' over inventing something that already exists, why not go the whole hog and just claim you beat Albert Einstein to the theory of relativity.

It's almost as if they have never heard of Greggs.

The website description continues: "They're perfectly satisfying all on their own, but we recommend dipping them in your favourite condiments."

After listing a load of their own, they ask the question: "A more interesting hot dog merits more interesting condiments, don't you think?"

Listen, America, never, EVER, call the sausage roll 'a more interesting hot dog'. When you invented KFC, we left it as that, we didn't open a chain of Kent Fried Chicken, did we?

It looks like I'm not alone with the distaste.

Some of Twitter even went to predict America's next move.

Trader Joe's has 465 branches across 41 states, but it'll have a long way to go to catch up with Greggs' sales of 2.5 million sausage rolls each year.

Greggs is definitely now a staple of Britain, and brings out the good in people. If Trader Joes can do the same, then we're winning.

There is a Greggs community on Facebook, which sets the precedent for how we should all behave. It states it is a 'safe place for Greggs customers to discuss ideas, experiences and have general debate'.

The fan community statement reads: "Please respect each other's views and try to remember, despite our differing views and preferences, we are all followers of the way: The Greggs Way."
