Five Guys defends how its ‘Boardwalk style’ chips are cooked following criticism

Five Guys' ‘Boardwalk style' chips are cooked very differently to regular fries.

Five Guys seriously love their chips, or fries as they call them.

You might have noticed that the American burger joint - known for its very pricey patties - always like to give you a bucket load of extra chips in your bag.

And that's not by coincidence.

Despite the hefty prices, many consider the chips to to be the best fast food-produced fries around, as Five Guys say they ‘believe in generosity’.

The eatery explains: “Our fries are served in a white cup which varies in size depending on the portion ordered.

“Plus, we always add an ‘extra scoop’ of fries in the bag as we believe in generosity.

“We suggest sharing the fries if you are visiting with other people.

“We recommend that the serving size for 1 Little portion is between 1-2 people, and for 1 Large portion is between 3-4 people, although it’s up to you!”

Although we're all here for big portions, it seems that their 'Boardwalk style’ chips have come under some criticism for the way they are cooked.

'Boardwalk style' means the chips are blanched in cold water then fried twice.

What some customers have taken issue with is that they're cooked in 'refined peanut oil', hence why you'll always spot a massive box of peanuts next to the counter, to 'further alert customers of its use'.

Some hit out at this, with one X user writing: "Five Guys is probably anybody with a peanut allergy’s worst nightmare fr."

Another said: "I wanted to try Five Guys and then found out they be frying the fries in peanut oil. I would quite literally die having an allergic reaction, so that's off the list."

About 1 in 50 children and 1 in 200 adults in the UK have a nut allergy.

However, Five Guys has remained insistent on using the ingredient and has explained why it's a big part of what makes the chips so great.

"Over the past 20 years, our complimentary peanuts have become a part of our identity. It is a well-loved feature of Five Guys fans and they look forward to having a pre-burger snack at our stores," they said.

"The taste of our peanut oil fries is also unique to our brand.

"We by no means want to exclude guests from our stores, but at the same time would not want to disappoint our peanut eating guests.

"We appreciate that nuts are one of of the 14 common allergens and take the necessary precautions to avoid putting someone’s health at risk.

"We have signage on our doors, tills and menus regarding the presence of peanuts in bulk containers."

Speaking of Five Guys, a man has figured out the actual reason why Five Guys charges so much for a burger.

In a clip posted to TikTok, author and behavioural science expert Rory Sutherland said: "Five Guys is an interesting one because no one would have thought you could charge $10 for a burger in an environment that is no more exotic than a McDonald's, right?

"If you delve a bit deeper, the burger and the shake — the two signature items — are the only things that are expensive.

"You get free drinks refills, you get an extra scoop of fries for free, you get free peanuts.

"All the toppings on the burger are entirely free, regardless of how many of them you want."
