There is nothing which breaks my heart more than animals being abandoned by the very people who are supposed to offer them love and support.
It's cruel, even more so when said people can't muster the energy to find their pets a new home, dumping them with the assumption that someone else will eventually make the discovery
But good things come to those who wait, or so we would hope, and the 'Land of the Strays' in Costa Rica is a paradise for 900 stray and abandoned dogs. Sounds incredible, right? Well, it is.
It's a temporary sanctuary for dogs that otherwise may have been put down at shelters, while they wait for their new home.
"Zaguates territory is a "No-Kill Shelter," a doglike sanctuary where we do not believe in euthanasia as a solution to the problem of abandoned dogs in Costa Rica. Our mission is to find a home for all dogs that are in our care. We are a temporary home for hundreds of dogs looking for a second chance, and we are also the permanent home of many others who may never find their own family. Zaguates territory is a nonprofit organisation founded by husbands and Alvaro Saumet Lya Battle, who for 8 years and have dedicated themselves to promote animal welfare and respect for animals.
Sometimes, just sometimes, our faith in humanity is restored.
