A war hero, who incredibly survived being run over by a tank among other war incidents, was given a fitting send off after hundreds of people turned up to pay their respects, even though only five mourners were originally expected to attend his funeral.
Following an appeal, which was put out by a group of veterans, scores of people flocked to former Reconnaissance Corps soldier Douglas Oswald Shallcross's funeral.
The veteran, who survived WWII, would have appreciated the efforts made by the ex-servicemen and well-wishers, according to his daughter, Anne Holloway.

She said: 'I am incredibly touched, it was lovely. His wartime memories were some of the last to fade away so I am sure he would have been so grateful.'
Among many incredible things to have happened in Douglas's life, he was once accidentally shot in the forehead and somehow survived, leaving him with a cross-shaped scar to remember the event.
He was a great-grandfather to three children when he died.

Among the people who turned up for Douglas's funeral was Simon Walker. He served in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Gibraltar and Canada between 1986 and 2001 and said he felt he had to pay his respects, reports the MEN.
The former full corporal said: "Just one word says it all. Respect. Respect for what he and so many of his generation have done."
A fitting funeral for an insanely brave man.
