Why can't he foster us?!

First thing's first - Sir Patrick Stewart is one of the coolest men alive. Not only was he the best Star Trek captain of all time, but in real life he's also just as awesome.

Did you know that he does shitloads of charity work? He also campaigns against domestic violence, and he's even Chancellor at the University of Huddersfield. Lucky students.

The 76-year-old gives absolutely zero fucks about how people perceive him, he's just a genuinely nice guy. Plus, hilarious.

I want him to be my granddad. Foster ME, Patrick. Please. Just for a little bit.

Well, unfortunately that's not going to happen. But one lucky animal did actually get to befostered by him. Pitbull, Ginger, was taken in by the actor this week.

The 76-year-old said: "She only arrived a few hours ago at our house. I've longed for this moment to come.

"She comes from a pit bull fighting ring. She was a breeding dog for a fighting ring. They're all over the country, every state has these things and they're very cruel."

However, the fostering is only temporary.

He added: "Now she's with us, but we are only fostering her and we are looking for a permanent home for her."

He wrote on Insta: 'Thanks to @ASPCA and @WagsandWalks, @madameozell and I are finally fostering our 1st pitbull! Meet Ginger. I'm in LOVE.'

The fostering was partly to raise awareness for the movement Adopt Don't Shop. The basic idea being to highlight the benefits of adopting an animal from your local pet shelter rather than buying. As we all know, there's a lot more dogs that need homes than there are homes that want a dog. It just makes sense.

He's clearly absolutely smitten with Ginger, as he posted this swimming pool video too...

I'm sure it won't be long before she finds a permanent home. Plus, all this publicity will surely lead to homes for more dogs.

And just because it's not every day that we get to talk about how great Patrick Stewart is on the Internet, here are some of his best tweets:
