Disgusting and sickening.

Visitors of Bandung Zoo on Java island in Indonesia have been appalled to see the living conditions and state of the sun bears.

With no clean water, or greenery, the starving animals are trapped inside a cement pit. Their skeletal frames have meant that they are reduced to begging for food from horrified tourists who throw them sweets through the bars.

It's a sad state of affairs and one that animal rights activists are trying to change. There's an online petition that is trying to shame mayor Ridwan Kamil into closing the zoo for good, which you can sign here. It's already had over 200,000 signatures.

Wildlife trade monitoring group Scorpion took the photos and footage and spoke to The Daily Mail. The director, Gunung Gea, said his team saw a bear so starved that it ate its own dung but when they tried to speak to the zookeepers, they said the bear was medicated and couldn't be seen.

Sun bears - often known as 'honey bears', are native to Southeast Asia and eat berries, nuts, small rodents, insects and lizards. They're called the sun bear because they like to climb trees to be in the sun - they're the smallest in the bear family. A healthy sun bear should way 27-70kg.
