Legendary comedian Billy Connolly left viewers of Comic Relief last night in tears after appearing in a pre-recorded segment that concerned dementia.

With his typical levity, Connolly greeted audiences across the country by saying: "Hello, Billy Connolly here asking your cash. Not for me obviously. I've got cancer and Parkinson's and I definitely need a haircut but no."

The 74-year-old Scotsman then introduced us to the stories of Bob, Jo and Margaret later explaining how any donations at all contribute to the cause of lonely widowers who have lost loved ones to dementia.

Connolly was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2013 but has kept doing his bit in the public eye.

The Twitter reactions said it all. Dan Walker summed it up nicely saying: "There are very few people who can make you laugh and cry at the same time. Billy Connolly is a rare diamond.

What a guy.
