David Beckham sparked an online debate after posting a picture of himself kissing his daughter on the lips. He's now opened up about the backlash, insisting that kissing on the lips is how he and wife Victoria show 'affection' towards their kids.

He said: "I got actually criticised for kissing my daughter on the lips the other day.

"I kiss all my kids on the lips."

Elaborating further to The Sun, he continued: "Brooklyn maybe not. Brooklyn is 18, he might find that a little bit strange.

"But I'm very affectionate with the kids. It's how I was brought up and Victoria, and it's how we are with our children.

"We want to show our kids love and we protect them, look after them, and support them, and we're very affectionate with them."

It all kicked off when he posted this image to Instagram with the caption: 'Kiss for daddy'.

For many people, this is simply a sign of affection between a father and his daughter. But some fans didn't see it that way. One user even accused the star of being a 'pervert'.

Another said: "I try not to judge but I can't help but think it's pretty weird that he kisses her on the lips considering her age."

"Tbh kissing your daughter on the lips is a little weird.. yes it is," is another comment on the picture.

However, hundreds of Beckham's fans were quick to jump to his defence.

dotty3779 wrote: "It's awful that people see wrong in a father and daughter sharing a kiss. I have absolutely no qualms with dads and daughters doing that. In fact I think it's necessary for a dad to do that. Every girl should be treated like a princess by their dad so they have high expectations in later life."

While thesartorialmumma added: "What is the world coming to when such a simple and loving gesture between a father and daughter garners such hate, disgust & divisiveness?! I am dumbfounded that people feel the need to spread their hate all over such a lovely, heartwarming photo.

"It's such a shame that dad's are forced to feel uncomfortable to show affection in such a way. What is wrong with this photo is not what is happening within it but the fact that the world now sees this as inappropriate. [sic]"

The picture has managed to attract an impressive 1.8 million likes at the time of writing.
