The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a third child, Kensington Palace has announced.

A statement from Kensington Palace said: "Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their third child.

"The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news."

The noble couple are churning out royal babies at an alarming rate; so quickly in fact that it has led some imaginative football fans to speculate Prince William might have an ulterior motive this time.

It's no secret that Wills is a football fan. The Duke of Cambridge is the President of the FA after all. What's more, he's an Aston Villa fan - only a true football nut could cope with that sort of suffering.

This obvious love for the beautiful game has convinced some fans that Prince William is trying to time the pregnancy in order to get two weeks' paternity leave while the World Cup is on.

On Sunday, 40 weeks from the beginning of the tournament, a tweet went viral about how any new pregnancy could result in the father getting his two weeks of statutory paternity leave just in time for the World Cup.

The tweet read: "If you get your missus pregnant in the next week or so you'll get 2 weeks off for paternity when the World Cup is on. Think ahead lads."

Obviously, Kate is already some way into her pregnancy and royal baby number three will likely come into the world well before the start of the World Cup, but let's not let facts get in the way of a good joke, ey?
