Make sure you're sitting down, because this is big news. Huge news. Are you ready for this? McDonald's is about to start trialling knives and forks in some of its restaurants. This is life-changing stuff.

In an attempt to keep up with 'gourmet' burger joints, the fast food giant will be handing out cutlery in about 1,400 of its French restaurants. You having that?

What do you think? I can't remember ever seeing anyone eating a burger with a knife and fork...

The knives and forks will only be given out for anyone ordering one of the new 'Signature' burgers - which cost twice as much and are cooked to order. They're served on a brioche-style bun and have toppings such as blue cheese and bacon. OK, now you're talking, this sounds good.

Maccies is said to be making the changes in a bid to keep up with newer chains, such as Five Guys.

Xavier Royaux, McDonald's market chief for France, told Le Figaro: "In recent months, we have seen a reorganisation of the burger market.

"Among things on offer are gourmet burgers, so as a pioneer and leader it was essential to position ourselves.

"For the first time, customers will enjoy their Signature burger with a fork and a knife, unheard of at McDonald's.

"Cutlery is a development rather than a break with the past, in the same way that we've brought in table service, now available at more than 80 percent of our restaurants."

I think I speak for all of us when I say, please introduce gourmet chicken nuggets next.

While the new Signature burgers are currently only being trialled in France, if they're a success there's a good chance they'll be made available in the UK.

And if you can't wait that long, get yourself over to France.
