A plane crashed into a busy motorway and burst into a ball of flames but incredibly everyone survived.

Two people have been injured after the small plane crashed on the 405 Freeway near John Wayne Airport in Orange Country, California.

Ian Gregor, a spokesperson from the Federal Aviation Administration, said the pilot announced an emergency situation shortly after taking off and was trying to return to the airport to land.

Captain Larry Kurtz of the Orange County Fire Authority told KABC the plane clipped a car and before crashing, but that no one in the car was hurt.

He said: "This could have been extraordinarily bad. Anytime you have a plane that crashes on the freeway, the potential for great loss of life and great injury always exists."

He added that the two people who had been on the plane, a man and woman in their 50s and 60s, had suffered traumatic injuries and were airlifted to hospital.

In a mayday call, the pilot told the control tower: "I've lost my right engine."
