A "miracle" baby has died after being taken home prematurely from hospital by their parents.

Dr Jaiprakash Narayan, an assitant professor of paediatric medicine, said the 2.5kg conjoined twins were born in a "healthy state" on Monday morning at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College to a 20-year-old mum

"The mother completed her pregnancy full-term and was doing well post surgery but the baby suffered breathing issues," he said.

"An operation is possible in some cases of conjoined twins but here it was nearly impossible.

"Despite having two pairs of all of their internal organs they were all trapped in one body, with only one pair of arms and legs. You cannot separate such children."

Despite the hospital warning against taking the twins home after just 32 hours from birth, the young couple went through with it. After a few complications, the twins sadly passed away.

"It was the couple's first child, which probably explains why they didn't see a doctor during the pregnancy and take extra precautions," Dr Jaiprakash said.

According to a study published in The Indian Express, two in 100 babies born in India had birth defects.

University of Pune's Dr Anita Kar, said: "We have been able to identify that 2.2 per cent of babies in India are born with congenital anomaly.

"In absolute numbers, this translates into nearly [600,000] babies being born each year with congenital anomaly, with heart defects being the most prevalent condition."
