A mother and daughter died in a sauna after the door handle fell off and left them trapped inside.

The bodies of the two women, aged 65 and 45, were found by the owner of the sauna after she became suspicious about the amount of time they had been in there and decided to check if everything was OK.

They had been stuck inside for more than an hour-and-a-half.

The pair had tried to break a window and a door to escape but were unable to and eventually succumbed to the extreme heat, the Mirror reports. Police said it was a homemade sauna and, while inside, the handle somehow came off.

It's reported that they were relaxing at a friend's house in Jioin, Prague, before the incident happened on Saturday morning.

Czech Republic police spokeswoman Iva Kormosova said: "The mother and daughter aged 65 and 45 were taking a sauna at their friends' place in a garden colony.

"The owner thought they were taking too long to come out so she went to check and found them lying on the floor.

Police shared heart-breaking images of the windows, which had been cracked as the women tried to escape.

Emergency services were called to the scene but the women could not be resuscitated and were pronounced dead.

Police said an initial investigation is under way and autopsies will be carried out on both women to establish a cause of death.
