Senior MPs across the UK will all come together today in an attempt to persuade Prime Minister Theresa May to legalise weed, The Independent reports.

The idea behind making cannabis legal is that the Government is behind on its drugs policies. It has also been suggested that legalisation could make the Treasury £1billion in savings on criminal justice costs.

A new report into domestic drugs policy by the Adam Smith Institute says the UK should follow in the footsteps of California, where marijuana is now legal, and MPs across all parties are backing the suggestion.

"The Government strategy is based around three main pillars: reducing demand, restricting supply and building recovery," the report states. "All three are failing."

Should it happen, a regulated form of legalisation would be introduced to ensure quality and purity and reduce crime.

"British politicians need to open their eyes to what is happening in the rest of the world," Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg said. "Cannabis prohibition is being swept away on a tide of popular opinion and replaced with responsible legal regulation."

According to the Home Office, 6.7 percent of adults aged 16 to 59 used weed in the past year alone. That makes it the most used illegal drug in the UK.
