Last night a tweet sent from a fake-BBC account announced the Queen had died and sent Twitter into meltdown.
After a year packed with celebrity deaths as well as this year being the first time the Queen had missed the annual Christmas service at Sandringham, due to ill health, the news spread rapidly.

When the tweet was shown to be false, a bunch of conspiracy theorists piped up and accused the government of a cover up using the hashtag #mediablackout.
The people behind the #mediablackout seemed to believe that the Queen was dead but that 'they' wouldn't tell us until 8am today. Given that it's now almost 11am, I think it's safe to say they were wrong.

Earlier today a Buckingham Palace spokesperson has said both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were alive.
"The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh continue to recover from their heavy colds," he said.
Rumours that reporters had set up outside Buckingham Palace also turned out to be false.
