A devastated dad has made an attempt to warn people about the danger of smoking skunk, after his son hacked off his own penis.

The man, who was named only as Nick, told the BBC his son went from being a 'bright, bubbly lad' to a 'paranoid waste of space', after smoking the drug.

He said: "His demeanour changed and it just escalated. It was a whole tragic trip down the hill."

He claims his son became delusional and was paranoid, he began sleeping with a tennis racket in his bed because 'he thought people were living in the walls' and that mermaids existed.

The dad said the family had over two years of 'hell, during which his son's mental health got even worse, until one night when he had a 'breakdown'.

Nick told BBC's Emma Barnett the incident after a 'normal day'. He said he woke up in the middle of the night to find his son ranting and raving.

The teenager then attacked his mum with a knife, before turning the knife on himself and chopping off his penis.

Speaking on BBC Five Live, he said: "He basically had a psychotic episode and did huge amounts of harm to both himself and his mother.

"It was absolutely devastating, you can't imagine anything of that nature happening...the whole episode was just surreal, I remember looking back its almost as if I'm peering in through a window and it's happening to someone else."

His mother survived and was able to call an ambulance. She has since made a recovery.

As for Nick's son, he is now drug and alcohol-free following a six-month stay at a mental health facility. Nick said he is 'returning to his old self'.

Physically, he has undergone a series of operations to try and repair his penis, but Nick said he may never be able to have children.

He said: "We recognise that this was an illness... he was totally oblivious, actually has no real memory of anything that happened, even now. Maybe that's for the best."

Nick now hopes skunk will be reclassified from a class B to a class A drug, as it can be up to 30 times more powerful than traditional cannabis.
