The thrill that speed brings, pushing yourself and your machines limits as far as they'll go, will always mean that people will break the rules.

Devon and Cornwall Police have released footage as a warning to riders for what can happen if you persistently risk your life, and risk the safety of others.

The video shows two motorcyclists racing along the countryside roads, breaking the speed limit regularly, and, at one point, clocking a speed of 170mph.

The rider zips alongside narrow lanes, blind summits, and dual carriageways in the sunshine. But even in nice conditions, danger looms.

The motorbikes have a couple of narrow escapes with other vehicles, squeezing in between the two lanes of traffic. Occasionally his mate can be seen, before disappearing again.

As the video nears its ending, the two bikes come close together at a roundabout, before the bike in front cuts in front and speeds off.

However, not long after this the leading bike approaches the car who has to move out to avoid a slow-moving car.

At this point, it's far too late, the car pulls out, the speeding bike slams into the back of it and is sent flying.

The speedometer on the bike with the camera shows that the speed is almost 90mph when he crashed. Some 30mph over the national speed limit for that road.

Miraculously he avoids an oncoming van, but by then it's too late, he smashes into the barrier on the opposite side of the role and is flung into the air.

Police confirmed the biker as dead.

The force's Driver Training Unit tweeted the video as part of a warning to those tempted to break the law in pursuit of such thrills. Particularly as the weather clears for the UK's hottest weekend to date.

The man with the video camera was handed a suspended prison sentence, with police saying it was the fastest motorcycle speed ever recorded in the area.

The tape was played to all in court.

At Truro Crown Court in 2009, the judge said he would have to live with the tragic outcome of "this piece of madness" for the rest of his life.
