A 71-year-old great grandfather has been beaten with a metal dog lead after confronting an owner about letting his dog foul in a private garden.

Colin Cuthbertson of Liverpool feared for his life during the attack, when he was whipped all over with a metal chain.

The ex-engineer claims that after he asked the dog owner to stop letting his dog foul in his garden, the man released his dog and struck him several times with the leash, resulting in nasty wounds all over his back, arms and head.

"It all started when I just said 'could you stop your dog fouling on my lawn please?' Then he just started on me," Cuthbertson recalled.

"I tried to explain to him that it's private land. His dog must have fouled on that grass four times.

"It's got such lovely wildlife so I hate it when dog owners let their animals foul all over it."

Speaking about the fight, Cuthbertson said that he had feared for his life when the dog owner began whipping him with the chain.

"I thought I was going to die. He started whipping me on my arms, shoulders, belly and head.

"He took the lead off his dog and started whipping me. I said to him 'I don't care, I'm going to kill you if you carry on'.

"He must have whipped me seven times. That thing was metal.

"I grabbed hold of his head and pushed it against the railings. He'd whipped me all over my arms, shoulders and head so I was just trying to protect myself.

"I'm 71 years old and I've got all sorts wrong with me, but I just didn't care. I just kept saying 'come on then, come on - I'm not afraid. Do you want some more?'"

The Kirkdale great-grandfather suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, angina, high blood pressure and hypertension.

He claims that dogs have been fouling in his garden for well over a year, but that this incident is the first time things have turned violent.

"He hit me right on the back and it left a huge mark - then he started over my head.

"Then I just picked him up and carried him. He only looked thin. If you ask me he looked like a bit of a druggie, so he was light.

"I just got my hand on him and pushed his head back to try and stop him whipping me. I said 'if you ever come back around here I will kill you'."

Colin's son Kevin has said that he now fears for his children's safety when they go round to visit.

"I feel so angry about what's happened...My kids stay here at this house," Kevin said.

"My dad just wanted to get close to the guy to try to him to stop him from whipping him.

"He just pushed him over the railings to try and get him to go away.

"My dad's got a lot of medical problems including COPD and angina. The police came and they called an ambulance for him, but he refused treatment.

"The dogs have fouled on the communal area for over a year now, and I think he'd just had enough."
