This is the heart-stopping moment a woman was captured on CCTV picking up a random toddler out of a shopping trolley in a jarring attempt to abduct him.

Police are now on the look out for the woman, who undertook the act at an ASDA store in Bexleyheath, south east London.

The tot's mother was right by the scene of the botched abduction, at the checkout.

Luckily, the mum clocked the whole thing and managed to intervene and rescue the youngster.

Casey Vidler wrote in a Facebook post: "I was putting my shopping on the till and this women took Harrison out of the trolley that was right next to me where he was sitting and walked away.

"Luckily I grabbed him. But as I grabbed him off her she repeatedly said "come with nanny" I was in such shock that at they point I did nothing."

She continued: "Have spoken to Asda and been to the police. Please be careful I don't know if she was trying to abduct him or if she just wasn't all their and maybe had mental health issues, either way very scary situation.

"Please be aware she's a women of around 60-70 years old Chinese ethnicity and was about 5'2 and was with a man who I didn't really see but he was around the same age maybe a little younger.

"Just please be careful with your children keep all eyes on them, I turned around for 2 seconds and she had attempted to take him. Please keep eyes pealed and hopefully this gets dealt with."

The woman was wearing white trainers, red tracksuit bottoms and a long, dark grey coat.

A police spokesman said: "The mother of the child was at the checkout when a female lifted the child out of the shopping trolley and started to walk away with him.

"The mother obviously intervened and grabbed her child back."

A spokesman for ASDA also confirmed they are working with the police with their enquiries.

The terrifying clip sheds a light on just how easy it is for young children to be snatched away from their families in public.
