A transgender man has announced he and his husband are expecting a baby.

Trystan Reese and Biff Chaplow, from Portland, Oregon, have revealed the baby will be along in the summer, and will join the couple's two adopted children to complete their family.

They made the announcement on the The Longest Shortest Time, a WNYC podcast, with Trystan opening up about what it's like to be a pregnant dad, and the long journey they've been on to get there.

The couple also took part in a Facebook Live Q&A, inviting questions from people who wanted to know more.

The couple experienced a devastating miscarriage last year, and had initially decided to wait before trying again.

However, due to the complications associated with starting and then coming off testosterone therapy, the couple made the decision to try again as soon as possible. And, after six months of trying, the pair received the news they had been waiting for: the baby is due later this year.

The couple said this time around they have been especially cautious, after what happened last time, with Trystan regularly weighing himself and taking pregnancy tests to check everything is going well.

Trystan said he rang the midwife to let them know they will be dealing with a trans-dad, as he has had bad experiences with transphobia in the past.

However, he added he needn't have worried. "There just hasn't been an ounce of transphobia from anyone I have come in contact with," he said.

"Every person wouldn't even bat an eye that there was a dude with a beard claiming to be pregnant, who is here to get bloodwork done - and I have been trans long enough to know that doesn't come magically."

Trystan and Biff made headlines back in 2011, as they shared their story about becoming 'accidental parents', when Biff's niece and nephew were placed into their care as their mum (Biff's sister) was ruled as unfit to look after them. The situation ended up with the couple setting up a blog to document their journey.
