An American man has fulfilled his childhood dream after losing over 200 pounds in order to join the army.

At 460 pounds, William Guinn Jr's dreams of serving his country in the military were quickly disappearing out of sight.

But instead of admitting defeat, the Texan decided that enough was enough and threw himself into a fitness regime that shed him half of his body weight.

Over 14 months, he spent countless hours working toward his goal in and outside the gym.

Sometimes he would even go out for an hour-long run after a two-hour-long military boot camp style workout.

"When I first started losing weight I was 456 pounds in 14 months without surgery or anything else," he wrote on Facebook.

"Just dieting, eating right, and gym 6 days a week and very active i manage to lose 211 pounds all thanks to planet fitness."

The married father of four stuck to his gruelling fitness plan just so that he would be able to follow in the footsteps of his grandparents and join the US Army.

On July 10, he was officially sworn in to the Army during a ceremony in Dallas, Texas.

"It can be done and yes for those that didn't know I [was] trying to go to [the] military," he continued on Facebook. "[It] will be a great start for my career and to push myself harder than ever before. I will graduate from basic and M.I.T and start my career. I do see a change."

An inspiring story that just goes to show that if you set your mind to it, you can achieve anything.
