When a feeling consumes you, it's pretty hard to fight it.

If you get a sexual attraction to someone, you may as well let it be, even if you didn't think it'd happen.

If, however, that sexual feeling is towards your mother, you should fight it. Fight that motherfucker until it's nothing more than a laughable memory.

Shane Burke couldn't fight that feeling.

Rose Bestall gave birth to Shane at the age of 15, but was forced to put him up for adoption when be was five-years-old.

For 13 years Rose tried to find out what had happened to Shane, but had no success.

After being distraught for being forced to give him up, and then being unable to find him, she was overwhelmed when Shane tracked her down on Facebook.

The pair reunited for the first time as mother and son, but Shane dropped a bombshell - he had fallen for Rose.

Yep, he fancied the woman who gave birth to him 19 years earlier.

The 35-year-old mother of four told the Sunday People: "The confession left me with a massive dilemma.

"I knew Shane's feelings were completely inappropriate but I had searched for him for so long and I didn't want to push him away again.

"I told him I loved him unconditionally as his mum but our relationship could never be anything else.

"Thankfully he understood and we're working on a normal relationship."

Shane believes that his sexual attraction towards his mother is down to genetic sexual attraction, a psychological disorder that occurs when a person falls for a biological relative who they meet in adulthood.

Shane explained to the Sunday People that he was very confused, but simply taken over by romantic feelings for his mother.

He said: "I now understand I was overcome by feelings of love for Rose.

"She is only 15 years older and I started to think of her in a romantic way.

"It was a very confusing time but I'm so lucky she was understanding.

Speaking of the moment he told Rose he had feelings for her, he said: "I'd had a few drinks and something strange came over me. I'd never thought of Rose in a romantic way but suddenly I'd started to have strange feelings for her. We'd been spending so much time together it was like we were boyfriend and girlfriend and going on dates.

"We went back to Rose's and we were having a cigarette in the garden when I just blurted it out."

Rose is now happily married to her partner Darryl.

Shane was adopted by a couple in Manchester when he was five-years-old, and by the time Rose took her fight for him to High Court, a judge ruled that Shane was already settled with his adoptive parents.

As you'd expect, Rose rejected Shane and didn't speak to him for a few days. Later she admitted that she didn't want to lose Shane for a second time, after being reunited after 13 years.

She explained the (obvious) boundaries of their relationship, saying that she loved him unconditionally, but not in a romantic way.
