A sneaky criminal attempted to get arrested on purpose so that he could smuggle loads of stuff into prison up his bum.

49-year-old Anthony McCarten hoped to get into prison by stealing two TVs from an ASDA in Liverpool.

When he was taken into custody, officers found small parcels falling out of the back of his shorts, reports the Mirror.

McCarten also had a strong smell of cannabis about his person. Police officers found 6.3g of of heroin, 23g of cannabis, 32g of cannabis resin and six mini mobiles in a seven-inch package hidden up his bum.

Liverpool Crown Court was told that the combined total for the stash up his arse was worth around £1,439. He admitted attempting to smuggle the stuff into prison - but said that the drugs were for his use only. Strangely, the heroin was wrapped up in £10 deals.

He told the court that he was a heroin addict and said that he tried to sell the TVs to a woman but she had no cash so paid him in drugs.

The court questioned that the woman he met had no money, but had £590 worth of heroin that she could trade.

Julian Linskill, who was defending McCarten, said: "Maybe she thought she could make more money from the TVs than she could from the drugs.

"I'm at a loss to explain that."

Mr Justice William Davis said: "Heroin in prison is endemic and is a huge problem, both in terms of the effects on the people who take it and the effects on discipline in the prison, because it is hard currency, in every sense of the word.

"You also had six phones, which again are hard currency in prison for those who want to continue their criminal operations from their prison cells."

McCarten was jailed for four years.
