A 72-year-old man was stoned to death by monkeys on Thursday after the 'rogue' creatures threw bricks at him from a tree.

Dharampal Singh from India was collecting wood in the forest when the monkeys attacked.

He was rushed to hospital, where he died after sustaining serious head and chest injuries.

Now the local police in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, are in a dilemma, as the family aren't satisfied with the death being ruled as an 'accident' and have demanded intervention by higher authorities on the case.

The Mirror reported that the monkeys - who are believed to have collected the bricks from a rundown building nearby in Tikri, Uttar Pradesh - have been causing trouble in the area for some time now.

Time and time again villagers have protested that the animals are causing havoc amongst the community, but unfortunately little can be done as they're a protected species.

Mr Singh's brother Krishnapal told The Times of India: "Monkeys threw more than 20 bricks at Dharampal on Thursday.

"Thrown from quite a height, the bricks were enough to kill him. These rogue monkeys are the real culprits and must pay for it."

Although the family are calling for action to be made over these hairy thugs, police have insisted they cannot prosecute monkeys.

Chitwan Singh, station officer of Doghat police station, said: "How can we register the case against monkeys? This will make us a laughing stock.

"I do not think it is a logical demand. We were definitely informed of the bizarre accident and we registered it in our case diary after which a post-mortem was also conducted."

Although this might seem like a one-off, very unfortunate accident, apparently there's been a rise in deadly monkey attacks across the country. Although it's not known which breed are the ones who killed Singh, wildlife experts say that rhesus macaques are usually to blame.

Back in 2007 the deputy mayor of India's capital of Delhi died after being attacked by a gang of wild monkeys, having suffered severe head injuries after falling from the first-floor terrace of his home while trying to fight them off.

And as recent as July this year, a five-year-old boy suffered serious burn injuries after a barrel of monkeys dropped a polythene bag containing crude bombs on him in Fatehpur. Two others were injured in the incident.
