Distressing scenes have erupted in Melbourne when a horse attached to a carriage fell over.

Naturally, you'd make sure that the horse was okay and hadn't suffered an injury that could leave it in a lot of pain.

However, video of the incident has captured the carriage driver yelling at the animal.

According to 7News, the driver tried to lift up the horse's head and could be heard saying: "Get up. F***ing lazy b***h."

The horse, named Tuesday, was pulling the carriage through Melbourne's CBD when it slipped and fell.

When passersby saw what had happened they rushed to help and couldn't believe the action of the driver. Some people even asked the driver to stop what he was doing.

Responding to the criticism, the man said: "Love, I know what I'm doing. Get out of the way."

That led to more people getting involved but thankfully the situation resolved itself before it got nasty. They pointed out that the horse couldn't get back up safely because it was still attached to carriage.

The driver's boss, Dean Crichton, has told 7News that while it looks bad, the man did his best to rectify a tricky issue.

"It is out of character, but it was a very stressful situation," he said.

"I don't condone his language but at times like that, help is better than negative comments."

According to the news site, horse-drawn carriages aren't allowed in Melbourne's CBD after animal rights activists campaigned to have the industry limited in where it could ride horses.
