Dynasties: Two Lion Cubs From Sunday's Episode Have Died

The animal kingdom is ruthless.

Bad news folks, two of the little lion cubs that were featured on the BBC's Dynasties last week have died, according to the film crew.

This Sunday's episode showed the Marsh Pride of lions trying to make their way in Kenya's Masai Mara. The cubs were the offspring of Charm, a single mother who is one of two females in charge of the pride.

However, once the film crew came back to Kenya after they had wrapped on the programme, they discovered the devastating news that the two baby lions are no longer with us.

It is not immediately clear how they died, but it is possible that they could have been killed by predators - which isn't something that you would ordinarily associate with lions.

The Marsh Pride is led by the cubs' mother, Charm, alongside her cousin Sienna. The pair of mothers had four cubs between them, the oldest being only three years old.

There were previously males within the pride, but they abandoned them and left the two females to look after and provide for the kids. That would have been a difficult task anyway, but with four cubs, nigh on impossible.

The two cubs could have been killed by buffalo, who sometimes attack lion cubs as an attempt to wear their traditional predators down.

In Sunday's episode, a herd of buffalo could be seen approaching and surrounding the cubs whilst their mother tried bravely to fight them off.

Eventually, after shielding them with her own body, Charm managed to fend off the buffaloes and escape with her cubs before they were all trampled by the huge beasts. However, it now looks like Charm and Sienna have now lost their battle for the young cubs' lives.

A Dynasties insider told The Mirror: "The most likely explanation is that they were taken by hyenas or another predator or even trampled by buffaloes,

"No one can be sure, but what became clear was they were no longer with Charm, and there was no way they could have survived alone at a few weeks old."

That said, it isn't all bad news. When they returned they spotted that 14-year-old Charm had given birth to two more cubs. Hopefully they'll fare slightly better than their older siblings did.

The show had already captured one harrowing moment when Charm was forced to abandon another cub after he ate poisoned meat. Farmers in the area sometimes poison meat to keep lions away from their livestock.

The five-episode series has just two episodes to go, one following African wild dogs, and the other following tigers.

With the realities of nature being as they are, it's likely that we haven't seen the last heart-breaking moment of this series.
