The diver was researching seals when the shadowy figure appeared in the distance

One of the best things about living in the UK is the relatively low number of things that could kill/eat you - apart from other humans that is.

But it would seem what I had taken as a fact of life has been proven false after a diver spotted a shark off the coast of England.

Lucy Harrison, 25, was diving Blue Caps Reef near the Farne Islands off Northumberland when she recorded the eerie footage.

In the video, the predator first appears as a faint outline against the murky, green waters, before drawing closer and becoming more clearly visible.

Lucy, from nearby Cramlington, said the shark couldn't have been more than a few metres from where she was diving.

"It wasn't great visibility. It was maybe five to 10 metres.

"I was recording the seals when I turned and saw the silhouette of the shark.

"I tried to get my buddy's attention but by the time he turned to look it had swam away again.

"I wasn't sure if I'd just mistaken a seal because I wasn't expecting to see a shark.

"Luckily, because I was recording, I managed to film it - and when we looked back at the recording you could clearly see it was a shark.

"When we got back on the boat a few other people said they had seen it too, I was just lucky enough to catch it while I was recording."

And the shark expert believes the shadowy figure could be a porbeagle - a predator from the same family as the great white.

A slight concern.

Lucy said: "It was definitely a surprise. I've never seen a shark in British waters, not many people have.

"I was chatting to my instructor and even the skipper on the boat said that he's never known a diver to have seen a shark in the Farne Islands.

"I don't have a clue what could have drawn it to the area, to be honest.

"It was probably complete coincidence that we managed to catch it because, from my understanding, they tend to stay away from divers."

It's not the first time the killer has been spotted close to these shores. The Telegraph reported in 2014 that a porbeagle had been sighted off the coast of Devon.

And though attacks on humans are rare, they do happen - as The Telegraph reported just this year, when a British fisherman was taken to hospital after being bitten by a shark in Cornwall, believed to be a porbeagle.

Doesn't fill me with total confidence, not gonna lie.
