Look, as outrageous as the story sounds, it's understandable that someone in a state of panic or surprise would mistake an inanimate, dirty sock for a reptile. On paper, that looks ridiculous - but take a glance at the sock in question...

Unfortunately for a family in Coventry, UK, they were so terrified that they called the RSCPA to help get rid of what they thought was an unwanted intruder.

RSPCA officer Vic Hurr reportedly approached the 'lizard' cautiously but was confused as to why she couldn't identify the species. Speaking to the BBC, Ms Hurr says: "It was around seven inches long and about two inches wide.

"It was protruding from the edge of the bed and it wasn't moving at all.

"I got out my torch to see better and that's when I realised it wasn't a lizard at all, it was a pink stripy sock."

The family were reportedly 'quite mortified' for calling the RSPCA for nothing but a dirty sock, but hey, at least they'd been operating on the safe side.

People on social media, understandably, couldn't get enough of the story.

An RSPCA spokesperson told the Independent: ""It was definitely one of our more unusual call-outs. The family called us in a bit of a panic, they were terrified a lizard had got into their house.

"It was obviously dark in the room and I think fear just set in. But they said it had been there for about a week and hadn't moved in that time. Vic said she couldn't stop laughing once she got back into the car and I think the family eventually saw the funny side too.

"The sock had obviously been there quite a while. It was a typical teenager's bedroom, I suppose."
