Chris Evans has revealed he is 'stepping down' from Top Gear after just one series.

The 50-year-old presenter, who signed a three-year deal with the BBC, took to Twitter to announce his departure and praise the 'beyond brilliant' team.

He wrote: "Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best my best shot but sometimes that's not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best."

The announcement comes just one day after it emerged that the presenter will be quizzed over historical sexual assault allegations.

According to The Sun, the 50-year-old will be questioned by London's Metropolitan Police in the next few days over the complaint which was made by a former colleague.

The claims come just two months after he was accused of flashing a female colleague "almost every day for two years."
