Comedian Ken Jeong has been hailed a hero after he paused his act to help a woman who was having a seizure.

Forty-eight-year-old Ken, who stared in The Hangover, was performing at the Stand Up Live comedy club in Pheonix, Arizona on Saturday when a woman in the audience suffered the medical emergency.

According to witnesses, Ken initially thought it was a heckler, however, when he realised it was someone who needed help he jumped off the stage and rushed to the woman.

An audience member who was an EMT also helped while they waited for medics to arrive. Once she was taken to hospital, Ken got back on stage and finished his set.

After he stepped back on the stage, he reportedly said he was happy that he was able to help the woman and got a round of applause.

Heather Holmberg, who was at the gig, took to Twitter to say: "A woman had a medical emergency during the show. Ken thinks its heckling, when people are asking for his help.

"He jumps off stage to assist. An EMT helped, too. Then on with the show! Great night! He is gracious and grateful...AND flipping funny!"

Heather told USA Today: "He couldn't see what was going on with the lights.

"He was playing with them from the stage for a second, and it was like, 'No, no, no. We need you!'."

Ken is a licensed doctor, although he no longer practices. He got his MD in 1995, but gave up the job in order to follow a career in acting.

He played a doctor in ABC sitcom Dr Ken, which mustn't have been too much of a stretch given his history.

However, he says that when he was a doctor he kept his funny bone hidden, telling NPR: "I never let on I was a comedian. I never acted out. It was really important to me, like, to not be Patch Adams.

"I was so super serious as a doctor, I would bark orders to my nurses. I was hard-core. I wanted to make sure I did my job right."
