Comedian Ricky Gervais is well known for his outspoken opinion on animal rights and can often be found on social media waxing lyrical on the subject.

Today was no different, as Gervais shared a shocking video on his Twitter account showing a dog being slaughtered and said that he wanted to 'kill' the person responsible.

The comedian, 56, tweeted a link to the video which is believed to have been filmed in China and shows a man slashing at the tied-up animal with a meat cleaver until it is decapitated.

He tweeted: "I'm probably breaking some sort of Twitter rules here, but I want to kill this c**t."

He added: "Apologies for posting photos and videos of animal cruelty. They break my heart too, but in many cases the sub human scum are recognised and brought to justice. Have a nice day."

The sickening video shows a man swinging wildly at the terrified dog with a huge knife as it struggles to get away.

However, the poor creature is unable to escape as it is chained to a post and is eventually decapitated after having been struck with the blade several times over an excruciating 30 second period.

The video is now being retweeted by campaigners who want to identify the man, who is thought to be in the dog meat trade in China.

Gervais has been outspoken about the treatment of dogs in Asia for a long time now and was active in calls to end a dog meat festival in China.

Gervais said: "My friends at Humane Society International are working tirelessly to end this cruel trade all over Asia, and they desperately need your help.

"I've seen the footage that HSI has captured on video, and it breaks my heart. I will never forget the look of bewilderment and fear on the faces of these poor animals - the dogs and cats await a horrible fate. No animal deserves to be treated like this."

In 2015, over 500,000 people supported a campaign fronted by the star and Judi Dench to halt the trade in dog meat in south-east Asia which sees canines plucked off the street and slaughtered.

He is also a supporter of many charities relating to the ethical treatment of animals.
