Selena Gomez has spoken out about the importance of body positivity after trolls targeted recent pictures of her.

For those who aren't aware, Gomez has been very, very ill in the last few years.

She disappeared from the public eye in 2017 and said that she had to go away to have a massively important surgery.

What we weren't to know at the time was the surgery was a kidney transplant that she was forced to have as a result of her diagnosis of Lupus.

Luckily, she had a lot of help to get through it all. She came through the surgery and - more importantly - her best friend Francia Raisa agreed to donate a kidney to her.

Since then she has returned to her career full time, and some of the less fun things that come with it - like paparazzi photos- have also returned.

Needless to say, the internet was not kind. Some trolls were saying that she looks 'fat or pregnant' as a result of some of the obtrusion from the surgery.

But she's made of sterner stuff.

She hit back at them with an Instagram post that said: "The beauty myth- an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of flawless beauty.

"I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone. Wind in her sails."

Fair play to her. People can be right dicks on the internet. Imagine being so bored that you go online and rip on people for their surgery scars. That's really ugly.

Shortly after her surgery in September, the-25-year old singer posted a shot of her and Francia Raisa post-surgery. It has been liked more than 10 million times online since then.

The post read: "There aren't words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa,

"She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis."

Later that year Gomez was awarded the Billboard Woman of the Year award at the Women in Music Awards. The accolade was presented by her friends and kidney donor.

A tearful Gomez dedicated the award to her and said: "To be honest, I think Francia should be getting this award. Because she saved my life."
